HANCOCK
HOSTS
HARVEST DAYS, OCTOBER 7th, 8th, AND 9th.
Vintage
baseball played by the rules of 1898 will highlight Hancock Harvest Days
October 7, 8 and 9 in downtown Hancock. Competing for the Honest Eddie
Murphy Award on Saturday afternoon at Hancock’s Firemen’s Park will be
the Hancock Nine, the Roxbury Nine and the Hamden Polecats. Hancock is the
birthplace of the legendary Eddie Murphy who played 11 years for the
Philadelphia Athletics, Chicago White Sox, and Pittsburgh Pirates. He
appeared in 3 World Series and was nicknamed "Honest Eddie"
because he was not implicated in the "Black Sox" World Series
scandal of 1919. Honest Eddie Murphy raised his family and spent his later
years in Dunmore, PA.
There’ll be plenty to see before and after the games in Hancock,
with most Harvest Days activities taking place in the center of the
village at the square surrounding the former Charlie’s Great American.
The two-day event is sponsored by the Hancock Partners.
Festivities
begin Friday afternoon with pumpkin painting and hayrides at Hancock
Elementary School, followed by a wine-tasting, chili-feed, and music by
the Kurpil Family Singers at the square.
Saturday’s
line-up, in addition to the baseball games, includes crafts vendors, a
farmers’ market and a fine arts exhibit featuring the works of
Hancock’s growing number of resident artists. Also on tap Saturday
morning is a Tractor & Antique Car Parade through the village.
Horse
and buggy rides, a chicken barbecue, and a charity pie auction by the
Hancock Rotary are slated for Saturday afternoon. The Uphill String Band
will perform at Saturday night’s square dance on Wheeler Street adjacent
to the square.
Harvest Days activities also include a scarecrow contest for
village residents sponsored by the Hancock Area Chamber of Commerce.
Winners will be announced by the Hancock Partners on Saturday afternoon.
Visitors
to Hancock during the weekend will also find sidewalk sales at merchants
surrounding the square, and Harvest Days specials at Hancock area
restaurants.
