Forgotten baseball great to be honored. He was the first man to face Babe Ruth when The Sultan Of Swat broke in as a pitcher. He was a teammate of Shoeless Joe Jackson. He played in 3 World Series, an honor most of today's multimillion dollar ball players can only dream about. He played 11 years between the Philadelphia Athletics, Chicago White Sox and the Pittsburgh Pirates. His batting average trailed Babe Ruth's by only 3 percentage points in 1918. Not implicated in the "Black Sox" Series scandal of 1919, he received the nickname of "Honest" Eddie Murphy. You say you've never heard of him? Well, you're not alone. Most people haven't. This is something Jerry DaBrescia is out to change. DaBrescia is with a group called Hancock Partners, a nonprofit group which is presenting an award to the son of Honest Eddie Murphy. Edward Murphy Jr., will receive a Lifetime Achievement Certificate on behalf of his father. DaBrescia Says, " Eddie Murphy was born in Hancock, NY, achieved national prominence in the sport of baseball and few people are even aware of it. We're going to tell people how great Eddie Murphy was and how great Hancock is." The ceremony will take place Saturday, July 17 at 8:30 P.M., appropriately enough, at Fireman's Park, the local Hancock baseball field where Eddie played as a boy. The presentation will take place just prior to the free showing of Field Of Dreams starring Kevin Costner, on a giant out door screen set up especially for the occasion. Eddie Murphy's son, a retired school teacher, still lives in the same Dunmore, PA home that his father lived in until his death in 1969. END
