November 5, 2005 TOWN SQUARE TO BE BUILT IN HANCOCK
The Hancock Partners, Inc., a not for profit community group for the Greater Hancock area, announced on October 20, 2005, they have entered into an agreement to purchase the property formerly known as Charlie's Great American block. The 40,270 square foot property is occupied by the former Great American Markets building, which will be demolished. The Partners have no plans to construct a new building on the site beyond a Gazebo or Bandstand. Buck Engineering of Cortland, New York has completed a Phase 1 environmental survey with additional testing to be conducted as required. The Partners look forward to providing a beautifully landscaped Town Square that will create a favorable impression for visitors and residents and will provide a perfect venue for the many functions already hosted at the site; from chicken barbecues to the Community Christmas tree. "The Partners and other early donors are grateful to have this opportunity to help Hancock make a superb first impression as well as preserve the aesthetic heritage of the downtown ." The $350,000 purchase price has been personally guaranteed by the Directors of Hancock Partners, Inc. with interim financing provided by NBT Bank. Additional public and private donations and grants will be sought after the closing in early 2006.
